Phyllis Jean (FOSTER) SWORDS, 75, of Springfield, passed away Monday, August 14, 2000, in Community Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born August 29, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio the daughter of Harry E. and Ann B. (BAKER) FOSTER. Mrs. SWORDS graduated from Springfield High School in 1942, and City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She retired from Community Hospital, after 42 years of service as a Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics Department. Mrs. SWORDS was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder of the church and belonged to the Mary Brain Guild. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Dan RINEHART of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, David A. and Pamela J. SWORDS of Springfield; three step-children and spouses, Karl and Joanna SWORDS of Montrose, Michigan, Ruth Ellen MILLER of Lewiston, Michigan; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Jack TUTTLE of Springfield, Joyce BATES of Springfield, Nancy and Hans POLTE of Kalispell, Montana; six grandchildren, Brad SWORDS, Marc and Nick HOLT, Erin, Scot, and Steve RINEHART; numerous step-grandchildren, nieces nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron J. SWORDS; and step-daughter, Christine SWORDS SMITH. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home, and one hour prior to service in the church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Oakland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Kay M. Glaesner officiating. Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery. Margaret Ann (WILLMETH) CULTICE passed away suddenly at 11:12 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2000. She was born May 23, 1940, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Harold WILLMETH and Eva (PATTON) WILLMETH RILEY. She was a graduate of the class of 1958 from Southeastern High School in South Charleston. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Charles Richard; four children, Kimberly CULTICE (Steve SKEELS) and Scott Alan of Springfield, Jenny (Gregg) HARMON and Staci Anne of Columbus. She is survived by a loving and devoted sister, Harriett MCKIBBEN, as well as three loving grandchildren, Corrinne N. and Madelyn C. HARMON, and Noah C. CULTICE. She will be missed by many cherished nieces and nephews; as well as her step-father, William RILEY. She was preceded in death by her parents. Her family will received friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jackson Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home, North Limestone Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael E. in 1973, whom she married June 27, 1942; son Michael Edward, October 8, 1946; and a sister, Abigail MALONE. He retired from the maintenance department of International harvester Company in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and was a World War II United States Army Veteran. Jeanne SHAFER WELLER, 84, a lifelong resident of the Springfield and Clark County area, died Sunday morning, November 12, 2000, in the Ohio Masonic Home, where she had resided for the past three years. She had been in failing health for several years. She was born July 7, 1916, in Springfield, the only child of Earl C. and Jesse E. (FUNK) SHAFER. Jeanne was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1934, and was active, along with her husband, on the Reunion Committee for many years. She was united in marriage on July 11, 1936, with Merrill B. WELLER, having celebrated their 64th anniversary this year. They raised their family of four sons at Lake Sylvan, just east of South Vienna. For a time she worked at Hollandia Gardens in South Vienna. After she and her husband moved back to Springfield, she worked as a receptionist/secretary for Dr. Delbert J. Parsons, and after his death, was a receptionist for Dr. Sami Gurgis at Community Hospital. Jeanne and Merrill enjoyed collecting antiques, especially WELLER pottery and Hummels. Her survivors include her husband of 64 years, Merrill B. WELLER, also a resident of the Ohio Masonic Home; four sons, Roger WELLER and his fiancee, Lynn POLLOCK of Davidsonville, Maryland, Ronald G. and Dianne WELLER, Robert J. and Dianna WELLER, all of Springfield, Roland B. Merrill Bucher WELLER, 85, formerly of South Vienna and a resident of the Ohio Masonic Home, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Community Hospital after several years of failing health and several weeks of serious illness. He was born near New Carlisle in Pike Township, March 28, 1915, the son of Edgar Guy and Leota (BUCHER) WELLER, and was a lifelong resident of Clark County. He graduated from Springfield High School and, with his wife, was active with the reunion committee for the Class of 1934. He was retired from Navistar International Truck Group with over 38 years, beginning in the office and progressing into several management positions. He was in the 27th year of retirement at the time of his death. Merrill was active in Freemasonry, a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 619, F. & A.M., where he had held several officers' positions. He was also a life-member of Springfield Chapter No. 48, R.A.M., where he had served as an officer and was a former trustee. He was a former member of Anthony Lodge No. 455, F. & A.M., Springfield Council No. 17, R. & S.M. and Palestine Commandery No. 33, K.T. He also served two terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Masonic Temple. He was also a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Central United Methodist Church and the Navistar Retired Management Association. He was an active bowler and great sports fan during his life. He, along with Arthur Haggy, formed the Clark County Pony League and helped manage the South Vienna team. Merrill was an avid collector of WELLER Art Pottery, a passion that he passed on to his sons. He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Roger M. WELLER and his fiancee, Lynn POLLOCK, of Davidsonville, Maryland, Ronald G. and Dianne WELLER, Robert J. and Dianna WELLER, all of Springfield, and Roland B. John Francis BITTNER passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at Alterra Sterling House, Springfield, where he resided for the past three years. He was born April 23, 1913 near Yellow Springs, the son of Theresa Margaret HEEG and John James BITTNER. John married Vivian Donna SPENCER in St. Paul Catholic Church, Yellow Springs on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1936. His grandfather, John Adam BITTNER came with his wife Elizabeth KREBS and their three children to Yellow Springs from Aschafferburg, Germany in 1876, settling on a farm west of the village. John graduated from Bryan High School and the Earlham College Institute for Executive Growth. He was one of the first people hired by Morris Bean in May 1936 when the company was known as Antioch Foundry. John was foreman, supervised the grounds maintenance, and later headed the Quality Control-Department. He retired after 42 years of service. In recognition of his high quality control standard, he was given the "Zero Defects Award" by 'General Motors Corporation. He was a member of the Society for Non Destructive Testing and was President of the Morris Bean Management Club. He was a life-long member of St. Paul Catholic Church, serving for many years on the Parish Council as Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. In 1940, he designed and help build the family's Cape Cod home on West Whiteman Street. John and Vivian loved to square dance and belonged to several Dayton area Western style square dance clubs. They had danced at the Blue Moon in Xenia and the Four Gables in Springfield in the 1950s. When Vivian learned to play keyboard at age 75, she taught John to play several songs. His favorite was "When The Saints Come Marching In". John loved roses; growing pruning, and pampering 85 bushes and three large rose trellises while still finding time to plant a large vegetable garden. He was considered a man of integrity by his co-workers and those who knew him well. He had a very dry sense of humor, siz-ing up a situation with a few droll words that could make a person laugh out loud. He loved nothing better than to be in the middle of a lively family get-together: listening, laughing, and taking in all of the excitement. He was modest, unassuming and taught by quiet example. John is remembered as a man with a wonderful smile, especially by those who knew him in the last years of his life John was preceded in death by his parents; and by his wife, Vivian, who died March 11, 1999. Born in Springfield, Ohio on January 11, 1913, Mary graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1935, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She had three majors - Latin, French and English, and during her teaching career she taught these languages in various public and private schools in Southern Ohio. Moving from Springfield, Ohio to Goleta in 1970, she diligently worked at the Santa Barbara County Assessor's office from 1975 until her retirement in 1982. Mary spent her life dedicated to her family. She is survived by her two children, daughter, Linda BECKWITH, of Goleta, and son, James KREIDER, of Yorba Linda. She leaves five grandchildren; Deborah HATCHELL of Goleta, Douglas RANDALL of San Diego, Daniel RANDALL of Goleta, Richelle KREIDER-James of San Antonio, Texas and Mark KREIDER of Allentown, PA, and four great-grandchildren. The family held a private service to remember the warm times they shared with her. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
