She was employed as an Administrative Assistant with the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, retiring in 1994 and was a member of the Abiding Christ Lutheran Church, the Shooting Stars Square Dance Club, and was a volunteer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Family Services. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Bernard "Bernie" two daughters and sons -in-law, Karen and Alan ZECKSER of Fairborn, Kelly and Keith SIMPSON of Plano, Texas ; a daughter, Sheila KRUSE of Fairborn ; eight grandchildren ; a great-grandson ; a sister, Merle CAMP of East Randolph, Vermont. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 08, 1996 from 10 to 11 am in the Abiding Christ Lutheran Church, 326 East Dayton Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn where memorial services will be conducted at 11 am with the Reverends Craig Fourman and Sue Nelson officiating. She touched countless young people with her loving guidance in schools in Indiana, South Dakota, (including teaching at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota), and Ohio. Juel A. BURKHARDT 96, a lifetime resident of Springfield, passed away in Good Shepherd Village on Thursday, July 25, 1996. He was born May 15, 1900, in Springfield, the son of John R. and Maria (LEITHAUSER) BURKHARDT. Mr. BURKHARDT studied opera music at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and performed in the Chicago area. He returned to Springfield and sang regularly at the Regent and State Theaters and with his brother, Karl, in local bands during the 920's and 30's. Mr. BURKHARDT worked for Crowell Publishing Company, National Life Insurance Company, and retired in 1963 from SPECO Division of Kelsey-Hayes. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and is survived by his wife of forty-none years, Mary Ellen (MORROW) BURKHARDT; and several nieces and nephews. Hew was preceded in death by his daughter, Wilda Maria BURKHARDT and was the last of his immediate family. Page 18. Edward E "John" PENWELL, 77, of Springfield, died at 9 am Sunday, January 19, 1997 in Veterans Medical Center, Dayton. He was born September 22, 1919 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Harvey and Alice (STROUP) PENWELL. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, having received silver stars and a purple heart for his service. He was a life member of the Veterans of foreign War Post 1031 and a life member of Disable American Veterans. He was a retired painter from the Champion Company following 23 years' service. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael BOWSHIER of Springfield, with whom he made his home ; two granddaughters ; and two great-granddaughters ; a brother, Harvey PENWELL, Jr of Columbus, Ohio ; two sisters, Julia FISHER of Springfield and Patricia SACKS of Hollywood, Florida ; several nieces and nephews ; and a special friends, Roy BEECE of Bellbrook, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret PENWELL on May 28, 1995 ; his parents ; a brother, Grover "Jake" DOUGHERTY; and two sisters, Grace STOCKDALE and Vivian NORMAN. Friends may call Sunday, January 26, 1997 from 2-5 in the Jackson Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home, North Limestone Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 pm with Rev Carl E Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
