ANDERSON, FLAGO, SCHELL Name of Newspaper is Daily News, Springfield, OH on Saturday, February 24, 1906

Thomas Benton FLAGO succumbs. T.B. FLAGO, one of the best known citizens of Springfield died Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his home 233 South Fountain Avenue. While the immediate cause of Mr Flago's death was Brights Disease from which he had been suffering for about two weeks, it is stated that the general breakdown in his health was due to exposure during the Civil War and especially in the Andersonville Prison and that since the close of the war he has never been rugged. Mr Flago was born March 18, 1842, in Urbana, Champaign County, although while still young his parents removed to Mechanicsburg where a large part of his boyhood was passed. At the beginning of the civil war he enlisted as a private in Company B, 32nd OVI at Urbana. He was in numerous bloody battles and was first made a prisoner of war at Harpers Ferry. During the final year of the war he was removed to Memphis, Tenn, where he again saw much hard fighting. He fought under Sherman in the capture of Meridian and the march to the sea and was taken a prisoner at Atlanta and placed in the Andersonville prison, from which he was released September 22, 1864. This, however, did not end his service for his country as he re-enlisted in the service. This time in the United States Navy within three months after his discharge from the army. Serving on the United States gunboat Collier of the Mississippi squadron, he was soon promoted to captain and acting boatswain, and was given an honorable discharge Aug 20, 1865. At the close of the war, Mr Flago came to Springfield and has since made this city his home. Thirty seven years ago he was married to Miss Elizabeth ANDERSON, who still survives him. Two children were born to them, Mrs Nora FLAGO SCHELL, wife of Mr Schell of Newark, NJ, who was at the bedside of her father at the time of his death, and Miss Jane FLAGO now deceased. Mr Flago was always active in politics, a Republican by faith. For several years he was county infirmary director and still later held the office of member of the water works board, holding that position when the office was abolished by reason of the new code. Mr Flago was one of the oldest members of the Clark Masonic lodge and of Mitchell Post No 45, GAR. He was also a member of St Paul ME Church. MARTIN, SMITH Name of Newspaper is Daily Morning Sun, Springfield, OH on Sunday, April 1, 1906

(Only Part of the Publication Source is Readable. The month and day of publication was cut off, I believe to be Abt. early April, 1906) Submitted by: Jane Martin Whitty (whittyfun@Juno.com) If you have questions about this obit. Death of J. B. MARTIN Jas. B. Martin, for many years a resident of Bookwalter, and later a resident of So. Solon, died last Wednesday morning (March 28, 1906) at the city hospital, Springfield, of a complication of diseases, aged 49 years. Mr. Martin was for several years engaged in the grocery business at Bookwalter and was the postmaster under Cleveland's administration. He is survived by a widow and six children. The remains were taken to his home on Fremond Avenue, and the funeral held at Clifton Avenue M.E. church last Friday morning, buried at Ferncliff Cemetary. His boyhood and young manhood was spent in his native place, where he secured a good education and acquired habits of industry, which characterized his life. April 24, 1881, he was married to Miss Annie F. SMITH. Six children were born to them - Earl, Carl, Ollie, Nellie, Raymond and Edith - all of whom are living, this being the first death in the home. After his marriage he lived in Bookwalter for 21 years. three years ago he moved to South Solon, where he lived for one year. For the past two years he had lived in Springfield. In early manhood, when 18 years of age, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Wesley chapel. He sent for his and his wife's card a few weeks ago, and gave them to Rev. Curliss of the Clifton Avenue M.E. church, expressing as he did so hope that on the following Sunday he would be able to be at the service. God had planned it otherwise, and has now transferred from the church militant to the church triumphant above. He was always deeply interested in Sunday school work having served as superintendent for a number of years. Those who have known him longest testify to his earnest christian life. He loved music, especially the bright and cheerful songs. Number six in the new Sunday school hymnal was a favorite "-Come with Singing Praise the Lord Today". He often said during the last year: "I would like to do more in the church, but it just seems as though I can't". And we know now how he was battling against the dread disease that was taking his life. He was an honored member of the I.O.O.F. lodge in Jeffersonville for 15 years. His upright life and christian character made him a man who loved and respected by all who knew him. In the community where he lived so long his influence was manifest in everything that was for good. In his home he was a kind husband and father, devoted to his family. It was but natural that he should desire to live. He was in the prime of life; he had much to live for, but when it became apparent to him that he could not get well, he was resigned to his Fathe's will; there was no murmuring; the same father that had characterized his life was manifest in his death, and he could say with the apostle: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." The funeral was conducted by Rev. Homer Curliss and Rev. Mr. Keifer, at the Clifton Avenue M.E. church of Springfield and intermnet was made at Ferncliff Cemetary.

HEDGES, PENCE, SEITZ, STEINBERGER Name of Newspaper is Daily Morning Sun, Springfield, OH on Friday, February 1, 1907

Louisa PENCE, daughter of David and Elizabeth STEINBERGER, was born April 3, 1825 on the farm where she has lived for many years, it being the homestead farm of her father and mother, near Urbana, Ohio. Now occupied by her son Thomas PENCE. She departed this life January 16, 1907 at 7 o'clock, aged 81 years, 9 months, 13 days. She was married to Alexander PENCE in 1841 when she was about 17 years of age, from which union there were four children, all sons. The firSt.died in infancy. The others are all living. Thomas, the aforesaid upon her home farm, George in Tulare county, Calif and Weldon near Topeka, KS. She was remarkably active for one of her age and was always busy about the work wherever she was. She was with her sister, Mrs Mary A SEITZ of Springfield, Ohio and assisted in getting up their family Christmas dinner of 1906 which she enjoyed with them very much. Two of Mrs.SEITZ's grandchildren, James and Lawrence HEDGES, living in Chattanooga, TN, failed to get to the regular Christmas dinner, but came a few days afterwards to the great delight of Mrs.SEITZ and Aunt Louisa, and they feeling that those grandsons too, muSt.have about as good a dinner as the others had on Christmas day, fell to work arranging it, Aunt Louisa, as always, about in the lead. It was during this effort she became so sick that she was compelled to take to her bed, which was about two weeks before her death, to which she was confined until the last. She was a very patient sufferer, and all this attention paid to her during her laSt.illness that it was possible for her sister to bestow upon her. It seemed extremely befitting that her laSt.days should have been cast with her sister, to whom she had often kindly administered, and now in return it seemed a pleasure for her sister to so kindly and agreeably administer to her every need. She had seemingly from the beginning of her sickness, felt that her end upon earth was near and expressed herself in that way, and that she was ready and willing to make the change. She joined the regular BaptiSt.church at Nettle Creek under its administration by Elder Samuel WILLIAMS, the father of its present pastor, 63 years ago, and was at the regular meeting of said church on the firSt.Sunday of December last, which she seemed to enjoy very much, as there it was spoken to her by the present pastor, Elder Thomas WILLIAMS, that she was celebrating her 63rd year of membership of said church by her presence at that time. During all those years she never failed to attend all of its meetings if it was possible for her to be present. She was a great lover of her relatives and friends and was always ready and willing to assiSt.those in times of their sickness or distress. She was a very attentive attender at church services and when the minister would be earnestly dwelling upon the great love, mercy and sacrifice ChriSt.had exhibited and made for poor and lost sinners in order to restore them from under the curse of the law, she was one of the few of the old school order who could not restrain herself from clapping hers hands and crying aloud with joy. This we regard with all evidence that she felt personally of the effect of that great sacrifice and its benefits. JuSt.before she breathed her last, she opened her eyes widely and looked heavenward, seemingly with greateSt.joy in anticipation of entering that great and peaceful reSt.prepared for her by her loving Master. She will be greatly missed by all of her family, relatives and friends as her absence causes a void that cannot be filled.
