A retired railway mail clerk, Mr VERMILLION was born in Lawrence County [Oh], a son of Daniel and Ellen HERFORD VERMILLION. Mr VERMILLION had been employed as a railway mail clerk for 39 years and retired in October, 1952. He was a member of the Railway Mail Clerks Association. Surviving Mr VERMILLION is his wife, Maude ; one daughter, Mrs Virginia ROGERS of Springfield ; one son, Daniel, chief machinists mate, US Navy ; one brother, Bert of Arabia, O ; two sisters, Mrs Flora MCMAHON of Huntington W Va, and Mrs Nellie GRIFFITH of Arabia, and two granddaughters. The body was taken to the Littleton funeral home.

Mr VERMILLION was taken to the hospital a short time before his death and died as he was being admitted. Preliminary treatment was given in the hospital's emergency room. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was born on Oct 20, 1900, in Lawrence County. Survivors included his widow, Esther ; a daughter, Mrs Robert MORGAN, and a son, Lewis F, both of Springfield, and three grandchildren. He was a member of St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The body was taken to the O'Brien-Kenney funeral home where friends may call Tuesday evening until time of services at 2 pm Thursday in the funeral home. The Rev Kay M Glaesner, pastor of St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Lois FULLER of Springfield, Route 2, Mrs. Jean ARMSTRONG and Mrs. Betty CORYELL of Springfield; five brothers, Roy LAVY of Piqua, Wesley of Springfield, Route 2, Orville of Denver, Amos of Dayton and Edgar of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel RAPP of Dayton, Mrs. Orpha YOUNG of Bellefontaine and Mrs. Iva HENKLE of North Hampton; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Littleton funeral home where friends may call until noon Saturday. The body will then be removed to the Asbury Methodist Church in North Hampton where it will lie in state one hour before services, which will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of Grimes-Kohl Post VFW, he had been an employee at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for several years. Adam BENDER, 79, of 2724 Dale av., and employe of the Ohio Masonic Home, died at 12:10 a.m. Monday in City Hospital following three days of ill health. A native Ohioan, Mr. BENDER was a molder by trade until his retirement some years ago. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Fraternal affiliations include Loyal Order of the Moose and Red Star Lodge, No. 205, Knights of Pythias. In addition, he was a member of the Molders Union. Mr. BENDER was born March 18, 1874, and had resided in Springfield for many years. He was the last member of his immediate family. His wife, Sarah, died in 1944. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Jackson-Lytle funeral home. Loyal Order of the Moose will conduct services at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Wesley Oliver WHITE, 79, of Lawrenceburg, Ky., whose sister lives in Springfield, died in his home early Sunday morning, according to work received in Springfield Sunday night. Mr. WHITE had lived in Anderson County, Ky., all of his life. Surviving are his sister, Mrs. Walter HARBER, and four nephews, all of Springfield; two brothers, Frank WHITE, of Indianapolis, and James WHITE, of Greenwood, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Constance BOND and Mrs. Blanche ERNST, both of Lawrenceburg; three sons, Joseph Thomas WHITE of Louisville; and Waller and Cecil WHITE, of Lawrenceburg, and nine grandchildren. Services and burial were held Monday in Lawrenceburg.

Dr. Alphonse A. WREN of 800 West End Avenue, who had practiced medicine in this city for nearly fifty years, died yesterday in St. Elizabeth's Hospital at the age of 76. Dr. WREN received his M. D. from New York University in 1903, and served as an interne in the Knickerbocker Hospital. He was a member of the American Urological Society. Surviving are his widow the former Genevieve KEMPT; three daughters and seven Grandchildren.

John BOOLMAN, 79, of 154 E Grand Ave died at 11:15 pm Monday in City Hospital following a serious illness of two months. Born June 10, 1874, in Clifton, OH, Mr Boolman was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth BOOLMAN. He was a retired painter and formerly was employed at Antioch College in Yellow Springs. He was a member of the Yellow Springs Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs T.T. NUNN of 156 E Grand Eva; a son Howard of Dayton; a granddaughter, Mrs Marjorie McCLURE, with whom Mr Boolman made his home; one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. His wife, Anna, died in 1943. The body was removed to the Littleton Funeral Home.

Allen EVERHART, 55, of 8 S Center St, a driver for the Circle Cab Co, died at 11:55 am Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. Mr Everhart was removed to the hospital by the Emergency Squad of the Fire Division which was summoned to the cab company office, 118 E Washington St at 5:33 pm Monday after Mr Everhart suffered a heart attack. He had been employed by the cab company since June, 1951.

She had lived in Springfield for about 42 years. She was a member of the Christian Church in Wellston, Ohio. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Kelly, Mrs. Mary Pierce, and Mrs. Linnie Green, all of Springfield; two sons, John and William Oiler, Springfield; a step-daughter, Mrs. Martha Smith, Springfield; three brothers, John and A. L. Betts of Chauncey, O.; 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Littleton funeral home where services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Clifford D. Mrs. SULTZBAUGH was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Tremont City Grange, No. 90. She was the widow of George SULTZBAUGH, a farmer by occupation who died in 1934. A son, Walter, died in 1931. Mrs. Sultzbaugh was a daughter of Jacob and Rachel MINNICK BAKER Baker. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Thomas BENNETT of the Springfield, Route 3, address; two sons, Harry B., also of Springfield, Route 3, and Benjamin J. of Broadway Rd., near Enon; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The body was taken to the Woods funeral home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Dr. Frederick Mueller, pastor of First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth KRUPP, 80, of 1602 Highland av. Died in her home at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday. She had been in failing health for two years. Mrs. KRUPP was a native of Germany and came to the United States at the age of 15 years. Her husband, Adam KRUPP, died in 1925. She was a member of St. Bernard Church and the Altar and Rosary Societies of that church. Survivors include two sons, Adam and Clarence, both of Springfield; five daughters, Mrs. Margaret MCDONOUGH, South Charleston, Mrs. Mary HUTCHINSON, Mrs. Katherine LEMONS, Mrs. Louise BLAZER, and Miss Josephine KRUPP, all of Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Josephine WHITACRE, Springfield, and two brothers, Jacob and Peter JUNG, also of Springfield. In addition there are 25 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Degenhart-Conroy funeral home and will be returned to the residence where friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday. Solemn requiem high mass will be said at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Bernard Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Phillip MCFARLAND, 83, a Springfield resident for 35 years, died about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in City Hospital following one month of ill health. He made his home at 1514 Broadway. A retired factory employee, Mr. McFarland was born Oct. 20, 1870, in Indiana, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William MCFARLAND. He was a member of First Church of God. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Viola GRISSO and Mrs. Katherine STRIMPLE, both of Springfield; four sons, Orace of North Hampton, Glenn of Indianapolis, Ind., Clayton of Springfield, and the Rev. DeForest McFarland of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers, Earl of Springfield and Lawrence of North Hampton, and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle HARDACRE of Springfield, Mrs. Nellie SCHAUFFNER of Springfield rural route, and Mrs. Ruffina HARDACRE of Anderson, Ind. His body was taken to Richards Memorial Home.

Page 2. Hubert L CLAY, Pitchin School Principal, Dies. Hubert L CLAY 54, of Springfield, Route 5, South Charleston pk, principal of Pitchin School for the last two and one-half years, died suddenly about 3 pm Sunday in Brown Hospital, Dayton. He was admitted to the hospital one week ago. Mr CLAY had been a school teacher for 32 years and was principal for a number of years in southern Ohio schools. He graduated from Ohio University, taught at Kitts Hill School, was principal at Cold Grove [Coal Grove] School and Waterloo School. Later, he moved to South Point, O, where he was school principal for 13 years before he came to Clark County. Mr CLAY was a veteran of World War 1. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ironton, attended the Methodist Church in South Charleston, was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Ironton and the Ironton post of the American Legion. Mr CLAY was also president of the Lawrence County Association in Clark County. He is survived by his widow, Ella ; two sons, L T and Philip, both at home. A third son, Frederick, died in 1940. One sister, Mrs Audrey PATTERSON of Ironton, Route 1, also survives. Mr CLAY's body was taken to the Sprague funeral home in South Charleston where friends may call. Funeral services will be conducted there at 10 am Tuesday by the Rev C O Diehm, pastor of South Charleston Methodist Church. The body will then be taken to the Phillips funeral home in Ironton where friends may call after 4 pm Tuesday. Additional services will be conducted there at 3 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wilgus, O.

Page 1 and 2 - A former Springfield resident was one of three doctors killed in a plane crash Monday in the swamps between Orlando and Melbourne, Fla. Killed was Dr. Roger W. GRIDLEY, 40, a former resident of this area. He was the brother of Robert Q. GRIDLEY, assistant city building inspector for Springfield, and has three sisters in Springfield and one in Urbana. Robert GRIDLEY said the three doctors, all from Orlando, crashed during a rain storm while returning from a fishing expedition off Key West. He said the crash occurred about 2 a.m. The pilot of a plane ahead of the craft carrying Dr. GRIDLEY said the violent storm arose suddenly and that he lost sight of the other plane shortly after entering the storm area. Search crews were organized and the crashed plane was spotted about 10 a.m. Monday. Some two hours later rescue crews reached the plane but reported no survivors. Several hours later the three bodies were removed from the swamp. The ill-fated plane was piloted by Dr. John Vance, an intern at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, and carried Dr. GRIDLEY, and Dr. Val Cardanas of Orlando. The three had stopped in Melbourne shortly before the crash to visit some friends. Dr. GRIDLEY had been practicing in the Florida city for the last six years. Prior to that he had served with the Army Medical Corps. He was a vice president of the Florida Anesthesiology Association. Dr. GRIDLEY attended schools in Springfield and Catawba and was graduated from high school in Mechanicsburg. He received his medical degree from Ohio State Univeristy Medical School in 1945. Survivors include three children, Carla, nine; Roger, seven, and Melissa, three; his brother Rober, and another, Chester of Orlando; four sisters, Mrs. Martha DAILEY, Mrs. Grace OCONNOR, Mrs. Anna FITZGIVENS, all of Springfield, and Mrs. Margaret NEER of Urbana. Page 9. John P. LOE, 81, of 1796 Edwards av., a retired foreman of the International Harvester Co., died at 3:30 a.m. Monday in City Hospital following several years of failing health. He had been seriously ill for the last two weeks and was admitted to the hospital Feb. 9. Mr. LOE had been an employe of the International 40 years at the time of his retirement in February of 1940. He was general foreman of the lumber yards there. Born Sept. 21, 1872, in Greene County, O., he was a son of Isaac and Anna Minerva SUTTON LOE. He had been a Springfield resident for 53 years and was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church. Mr. LOE also was affiliated with Springfield Lodge No. 33, IOOF. Surviving are his widow, Georgiana; one son, J. Eldon of Springfield; one sister, Mrs. Lottie HACKETT of Yellow Springs; four grandchildren and three great - grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
