Elmer I. ASHBY, 74, of 233 N. Fostoria av., died at 13:30 p.m. Thursday in Community Hospital, where he had been admitted a few hours earlier. He was a retired Springfield postal employe. Mr. ASHBY retired in 1962 as a foreman and supervisor of outgoing mail after 42 years of service at the local Post Office. He was a member of the American Association of Retired People. A resident of Springfield most of his life, he was born in Illinois Arpil 26, 1897, a son of John and Sarah SWANICK ASHBY. Survivors include his wife, the former Edna Kearfott HINKLE; a son, John R. of Port Huron, Mich.; a stepson, Richard E. HINKLE of Milpitas, Calif.; seven sisters, Mrs. Ruth LAWLESS of Xenia, Mrs. Dorothy WHITMER and Mrs. Pat THAYER of Springfield, Mrs. Margaret HAUGHEY of Kettering, Mrs. Marjorie BOCH and Mrs. Sarah HALL of Detroit, and Mrs. Grace HOGAN of Chicago; a brother, Burt of Dayton; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends may call in the Conroy Funeral Home from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Services will be conducted there at 10:30 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Wesley STEDEFELD. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Versailles -- Roscoe F. WEEKS , 76, of Versailles, died at 3:10 p.m. Thursday in Wayne Hospital, Greenville. Survivors include six children, Mrs. Dorothy BLOSSER and James WEEKS , both of Urbana, Mrs. Eugene DANIELS of DeGraff, Miss Louis Jean WEEKS of Kalamazoo, Mich., Robert of Hamilton and William of Versailles; five half-brothers and sisters; 26 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His body was taken to the Miller-Hill Funeral Home, Versailles, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, DeGraff.

West Mansfield -- Mrs. Jennie M. WYNN , 91, widow of Charles C. WYNN and former resident of Richwood, died Tuesday night in the Union County Home, Marysville, following a long period of failing health. She was a member of the King's Daughters here and attended the First Baptist Church, Richwood. She was a native of Union County, and a daughter of Samuel and Susan FIELDS BURNSIDE. Her husband died in 1960. Also deceased are a son, three brothers and a sister. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gladys WADE, Columbus; two sons, Charles L. WYNN , Columbus, and Donald WYNN , Bucyrus, and nine grandchildren. Services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Ballinger Funeral Home at Richwood in charge of the Rev. Lester NORTON. Burial will be in Claiborne Cemetery.

Mrs. Alwilda Catherine GRUBE, 76, of 37 Dartmouth rd., died at the Ridgewood Nursing Home at 12:30 p.m. Thursday after five months of illness. She was born in Springfield Aug. 12, 1895, a daughter of Henry and Lillie VIETS GRUBE. She was a member of Auburn Lutheran Church and Rebekal. Circle of Auburn Lutheran Church Women. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Effie PERCHMENT and Mrs. Dorothy KENYON; a brother, Ora GRUBE, and a niece and nephew. Services will be conducted in the Littleton Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Roland LANGFORD, pastor of Auborn Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery. Mrs. Martha J. HUMSTON, 88, of 227 N. Light st., who along with her husband, William H., on their 69th wedding anniversary in 1970 received a letter from President Richard M. Nixon, died at 8 a.m. Friday in Mercy Medical Center. She had been ill for three weeks. Mrs. HUMSTON was born June 12, 1883, in Wilmington, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John STRATTON and had resided her for the past 55 years. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Daughters of America, Rebekah Lodge, IOOF, Grandmother's Club and taught ceramics at the Drop-In Center. The letter from President Nixon carried a message from the President and his wife about the many years of happy moments that Mr. and Mrs. HUMSTON must have shared in 69 years of marriage. In 1967 Mr. and Mrs. HUMSTON were named King and Queen of the Golden Wedding observance at the Clark County Fair and in 1968 were named the "Model Grandparents of Clark County" at the Ohio State Fair. Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Ruth SEALOCK of Columbus; two grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois, one son, Hartzell, and one grandchild. Her body was taken to the Littleton Funeral Home where friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 Sunday. Mrs. Lola M. KING , 83, of 2231 Shawnee blvd., widow of former State Representative Fred KING , died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Mercy Medical Center. She was born Oct. 11, 1888, in Jeffersonville, Fayette County, the daughter of Joseph and Miranda SMITH ARMASTONG. She was employed in the Recorder's Office in the 1920s while her husband, Fred, was Clark County Recorder. She later worked for the Crowell-Collier's Publishing Co. Mrs. KING was a member of the Jeffersonville United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Jeffersonville Pythian Sisters. She attended Jeffersonville schools and had resided here since her marriage in 1920. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Bertha R. FRENCH of Jeffersonville; one niece, Mrs. Richard D. DANIELS of Springfield, and one grand-nephew, Randy DANIELS of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1942. He served as a State Representative from Clark County in the late 1930s and early '40s. Her body was taken to the Jackson, Lytle & Coffman Funeral Home where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Frances L. Greene, 69, wife of J. Robert GREENE, of 2127 South Hadley Road, was found dead in her bathroom of apparently natural causes Friday. Fire Division emergency squad-men found her dead about 1:10 p.m. She was born September 17, 1902, in Muncie, Indiana, the daughter of James and Amelia PRICE SHARP. She retired in 1970 from the Clark County Recorder's Office after six years of service. Mrs. GREENE was a member of the Central Unite Methodist Church, past president of the Warder park PTA, Past Council President of Springfield PTA, past member of the Springfield YMCA Executive Board, Public Employees Retirement System, was active in the Republican Party and was active in civic affairs. Survivors include her husband, J. Robert; one son, James R.; two granddaughters, Cynthia and Deborah; three brothers, John and Gene of Springfield and Don SHARP of Kokomo, Indiana; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Phillips of Springfield and Jenette of California, and several nieces and nephews. Word was received here Friday of the death of Charles L KERR of Cleveland, a former resident of Springfield. He died Monday in the Lakeside Hospital of University Hospital, Cleveland. Mr Kerr, a graduate of Springfield (South) High School in 1915, was the founder of Kerr Lakeside Industries Inc, now K.L.I. Inc, Delker Mfg Inc, manufacturing representatives. While a resident of Springfield he was involved in athletic programs and was a member of the former Leaders Gymnasium Class of the YMCA. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Al Koran Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters, and the Euclid Rotary Club and was formerly a trustee of the Vocatinoal Guidance Bureau. Survivors include his wife, Cora K; daughters Mrs Robert H LEASE and Mrs Bentley F SAUER Jr, and a son, Richard W. Memorial services were held in the Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church, Chester Ave, Cleveland.

She was the wife of Bascom S KEENE who survives along with four sons, Clayton of Springfield, Elmer, Robert, and Kyle all of Florida; five daughters Mrs Lillian McGUIRE of Florida, Mrs Shirley BISHOFF of Marysville, Edith, Kay, and Judy all of Florida; three sisters, Mrs Josephine SMELTZER of Cleveland, Mrs Bea ANDERSON of Virginia and Mrs Nell BYRD of Huber Heights; one half-brother Dallas SHORT of Virginia and 18 grandchildren. Mrs Keene's body was taken to the North Funeral Home, New Port Richey for services and burial Saturday.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Orval HOOTEN, State Commander, Ohio Veterans WWI; three sons, Harold of Michigan, William of California and John of Urbana, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. "Fairborn Boy, 9, Killed" "Five In Family Injured" (Photos on pg 1 & 16) A nine-year-old Fairborn boy was killed in an auto-train crash Thursday night that sent the other five members of his immediate family to hospitals. Douglas SCOTT, son of Mr and Mrs Robert SCOTT of 8147 Gibson av, Fairborn, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital about 8:35 pm. Spokesman there revealed that he suffered a fractured skull and a broken neck. Early Friday morning, a Springfield man died in an auto wreck on Ohio 4 in Champaign County. John E PENWELL, 39 of 1212 S Fountain av, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mercy Medical Center after an accident about 1:25 am. This fatality is still under investigation by the Champaign County sheriff's office. The SCOTT boy died after a crash at the Penn Central crossing over the Haddix rd about two miles south of Enon. He was a passenger in a car driven by his father, Robert, 31, who, along with his mother, Brenda, 29; two sisters, Rhonda, 4 and Joy, 21 (See Fatality--Page 16) months, and a brother, Billy, 10, also were injured. Billy was listed in "fair" condition Friday in Mercy Medical Center, where he was being treated for fractures of his left leg and ankle. The other injured were released after treatment in the W-PAFB Hospital. Engineer of the service diesel, Jack L RUTLEDGE, 37, of Rockford, O, told Sheriff's Deputy Phil OAKLEY that the train was traveling northeast when a car pulled out in front of his diesel. He said his diesel, which was pulling only a caboose, was traveling between 30 and 35 miles per hour. RUTLEDGE said the station wagon, which was heading towards Dayton-Springfield rd, was traveling slowly. He said the driver apparently did not see the train. There are no warning lights at the crossing, but there are cross buck warning signs. The car was knocked 64 feet north from the point of impact into a ditch. The train traveled 162 feet after the impact. Deputy OAKLEY said the accident occurred about 8:35 pm. He said the Scott family was en route to its home in the Holiday Valley development southwest of Enon in Clark County. Emergency squads from Enon, Fairborn and Crystal Lakes, as well as fire department apparatus from the Enon department, aided in rescue operations. Douglas' death was the 23rd traffic fatality in Clark County n 1972. The car was demolished, with the front part ripped away from the rest of the twisted wreckage. Mrs Dee HINES of 8336 Haddix rd, was in her kitchen at the time, and could see the tracks and heard the crash. Her children, who were in front of the house, told Mrs HINES they saw the train hit the car and drag it up the tracks. Mrs HINES said she and neighbors "started down the track and we found a boy lying there, but I couldn't get a pulse." She said she covered the boy and went farther down the tracks where she found another boy who was badly cut, but conscious She said Mr and Mrs SCOTT told her that he had crossed the first set of tracks slowly, but did not see or hear the train coming on the other set of tracks. Several persons told Deputies OAKLEY and FOX that they did hear the train's horn as it neared the crossing.

Conrad Preston BOWERS, 38, of 415 E. Euclid Ave. died at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10, 1972 in Community Hospital following 3 weeks of failing health. He was born Aug. 6, 1934 in Springfield, Ohio. The son of Robert and Clara Hagerdon BOWERS. He was the co-owner of the Main Seat Cover at 214 W. Main St. And an autotrimmer. Mr. BOWERS was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Karen L., a son, Kelly Joe; a daughter Debra Lynn; two step-daughters, Julie Ann and Phyllis Ann RIFE, and four other children by a previous marriage; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert BOWERS of Springfield; two sisters; Mrs. Janice K. LAMBERT and Mrs. Cindy ALLEN of Springfield; Two brothers, Jimmie L. and Ronald G. BOWERS of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. His body was taken to Littleton Funeral Home. Services were held in charge of Rev. Raymond E. BOWERS. He was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Ray BENNINGER, 76, of 1624 S. Fountain Av., died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday at Community Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. BENNINGER had been employed as a furniture salesman in Springfield for 49 years until he retired in 1961. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I. Born in Springfield June 18, 1896, he was the son of Philip and Mary BRENNAN BENNINGER, and had lived in Springfield all his life. He was a member of St. Raphael Church and the parish Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy R. CHERRY, and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Donald WELCH of Springfield. Friends may call in the O'Brien-Kenney Funeral Home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Visitation services will be held there at 8 p.m. Monday. Mass of the Resurrection will be sung at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Raphael Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
