Parents Notified Of Pilot's Death. Official Word of Lt. John CAST'S Crash Received.
Official notification of the death of First Lt. John CAST, pilot of the B-17 bomber which crashed Tuesday on a hill near Manchester, N.H. was received here Sunday night by his mother, Mrs. Clara CAST, 107 N. Greenmount av. This followed previous word from the commanding officer at Tearney Field, Neb, that Lt. CAST was missing. His widow, Glenna, and five month-old son, Earl Edward, reside at 1450 Obenchain av. Searchers reached the wreckage Thursday after fighting their way through heavy underbrush and upon their arrival found the entire 10-man crew dead. Officials said the plane appeared to have exploded when it crashed during a storm. All relatives of the crew members have been notified. A graduate of Catholic Central High School, Lt. CAST was employed by the New York Central Railroad before entering service in January, 1942. He first entered the quartermaster corps of the Army and was later transferred to the Army Air-Force. During his training as an air cadet, he was stationed at McDill Field, Fla. Relatives are awaiting word when the body is to be shipped to Springfield. Upon its arrival here, it will be taken to the O'Brien funeral home.

Mrs. Ethel Irene North, 45, of 655 Hillside Av, wife of Harry L. North Sr. died in her home at 3: 45 a.m. Friday, following an illness of two weeks. Born May 9, 1899 in Pittsburgh, Pa, Mrs. North was a member of the Ladies of the Moose. Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Mrs. James Wood of Springfield; a son, Harry E. Jr, with the U.S. Marines at Cherry Point, NC; three grandchildren; her father, Harry Brain; and two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Pressley and Mrs. Esther Parcell, all of this city. The body was removed to the Littleton Funeral Home.

William Dawson Dies After Fall. Skull Fracture Fatal To Construction Worker. William A. DAWSON, 51, of 1056 Lagonda Avenue, died in the City Hospital at 3: 55 a.m. Thursday of a fractured skull, received when he fell 10 feet from the top of a soy bean extraction plant at the Farm Bureau Elevator, 442 North Limestone Street, at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. DAWSON, who had been visiting in Scranton, Pa., was returning to Springfield when the accident occurred. DAWSON, an employee of the Huffman and Wolfe Construction Co., Columbus, had lived in Springfield roe the past two years. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 97 and the local council of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his widow; a three-year-old daughter, Mary, and six sisters, Johanna, Kathleen, Frances and Elizabeth DAWSON, Mrs. James AUSTIN and Mrs. William LANGAN, al of Scranton. Walter H. GRIDLEY, 74, or 830 W. Jefferson st., died at 7 p.m. Sunday in the home of his son, Chester GRIDLEY, in Orlando, Fla. where he was visiting. Deather foolwed several weeks of illness. Born in Springfield March 26, 1870, he had resided in Clark County all his life; moving to Springfield four years ago from near Catawba. He was employed by the Steel Products engineerig Co. until October, 1943 He was a member of Clark Lodge No. 101, and the Catawba Methodist Church. Survivors are three sons, Chester, of Orlando, Fla., Roger of Columbus, Robert, of Springfield, four daughters, Mrs. John O'CONNOR, Springfield, Mrs. L. L. FITZGIVEN, Springfield, Mrs. Ralph NEER, Urbana, Route 1, Mrs. Dewey SALYER, Miami, Fla; ten grandchildren, one great-grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Laura WELLS, Cleveland. The body will be brought to the Littleton funeral home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Oscar O. CORY, Route 3, Mechanicsburg Pk., will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Jackson-Lytle funeral home in charge of the Rev. C. R. Smith, pastor of Lagonda United Brethren Church. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. Mrs. CORY died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in her home following eight years of failing health and about one month of serious illness. She was born in Ross County, and was named Sarah JAMISON, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Clara JAMISON. Mrs. CORY had lived in Clark County about 26 years, and was a member of the Persbyterian Church in Concord. Her survivors include her husband; two sons, Franklin J. of Springfield, Route 3, and Charles P. of Cleveland; three daughters, Mrs. Eleanor HUSTON, of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Anna Marie HENSEY, of Gadsden, Ala., and ;Mrs. May M. LAWLER, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. May M. CORE, of Bellefontaine, and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Carrie E. MCKEEVER, 57, of 123 E. Cecil st., died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday in City Hospital, following a two day illness. She was born Dec. 14, 1886, in Springfield and lived here all her life. She was a member of Circle 4, Mrs. Patton's Bible Class, and Central Methodist Church. Mrs. MCKEEVER is survived by her husband, Warren E.; three sons, Orville E., U.S. Army master sergeant, now in Australia, Roger W. and Virgil A. of Springfield; one daughter, Mrs. Paul WEIKERT of Springfield; her mother, Mrs. Mary PADEN of Donnelsville; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel HARWOOD of Springfield, and Mrs. Lester PICKERING of Donnelsville; one brother, John Quincy ANDREWS of New Carlisle, and five grandchildren. John L. Price, 80, died at 10 p.m. Sunday in his home in Plattsburg, following and extended illness. A member of the Congregational Christian Church, he was affiliated with the Campbell and Price General Merchandise Store. Max PRICE, superintendent of schools in West Liberty, is his only immediate survivor. The body was removed to the Sprague funeral home in South Charleston and will be returned to the residence Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Plattsburg Congregational Christian Church.

Albert B. HUGHEL, 62 of 1122 N. Lowery av., a salesman for Borden's for more than 30 years, died at his home at 10:30 pm Sunday following eight months of illness. Mr. HUGHEL was born in Springfield on Aug. 9, 1882, the son of Marion and Elizabeth HUGHEL, and had lived here his entire life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, St. Andrew's Lodge No. 619, F. and A. M., Springfield Chapter and Council, Palestine Commandery, Knights Templar; Antioch Temple of Shrine; Home City Chapter No. 258, Order of Eastern Star; and the Cooperative Club. Surviving are his widow, Susie; and three brothers, Clyde of Urbana, Merton of Cincinnati, and William of Springfield. The body was taken to Richards Memorial Home.

Alden E. OVERHOLSER, 71, of Beatty, died of a heart attack at 5:50 p.m. Monday at 730 Central av., where he was making repairs to his property. Mr. OVERHOLSER was born in Lawrenceville on May 30, 1873, the son of Sarah and Peter OVERHOLSER, and had resided in Clark County almost all his life. He was a member of Maple Grove Church of God in Lawrenceville. Surviving are his widow, Esther; three sons, Paul and Howard of Route 2, Springfield, and J. Home of Los Angeles, Calif; one half-brother, Lamoil OVERHOLSER of Route 2, Springfield; and six grandchildren. The body was taken to Richards Memorial Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. ASEBROOK Dies At Age 72. Mrs. Elizabeth L. ASEBROOK, 72, died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday in her home at 1777 Lagonda Avenue, after a long illness. Born in Piqua, Mrs. ASEBROOK had resided in Springfield almost all her life. She was a member of the Ladies Sodality and a life member of the St. Bernard Church. Her husband, George, died several years ago. Survivors are six daughters, Mary of Detroit, Mrs. Josephine HALL, of San Francisco, Mrs. Albert SINCLAIR, of Detroit, Margaret, Eleanor and Mrs. Robert Miller, all of Springfield; eight sons, Harry of Columbus, William of Dayton, and George, Charles, Albert, James, Robert and Francis, all of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Josephine FISCHER and Mrs. Charles WELKER, Springfield, and 16 grandchildren. The body was removed to the Degenhart funeral home.

Harry T. WAKEFIELD, 61, of 1789 Warder Street, died in his residence at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday after a heart attack. He had been in failing health the past year. Mr. WAKEFIELD was born in Durham, England, on January 1, 1883, and was brought to this country when he was six months old. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Anna May WAKEFIELD and Mrs. Harold JEFFRERIES both of Springfield. The body was taken to the Littleton funeral home. Burial will be in Glouster.

Mrs. J. D. MILLAR Succumbs At 71. Mrs. John D. MILLAR, 71, of Columbus, formerly of Springfield, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harold BACHMAN, at Columbus, following a four-month illness. Her husband, who died two years ago, formerly was secretary of the Ohio Retail Grocers Association and maintained offices in Springfield for a number of years. The couple moved to Columbus about 15 years ago. Born near Groveport, Oho, Mrs. MILLAR is the former Gertrude Florence ROHR. Survivors, besides her daughter in whose home she died, are five sons, John Dale of Springfield; Leon Glen of Canton; Lynn DeWitt of Columbus; Vynul Urlin of Cincinnati, and Kenneth Rohr of Columbus, and 15 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday in the Shroyer Hilltop funeral home, Columbus, and burial will be in Obetz Junction Cemetery, near Columbus.

Funeral services were being arranged Saturday for Mrs. Robert ASEBROOK, 27, of 23 South Burnett Road, who died at 9 a.m. Friday in the City Hospital, where she had undergone three major operations. Funeral services were to be conducted Saturday in St. Bernard Church for Mr. ASEBROOK'S mother, Mrs. Elizabeth L. ASEBROOK who died Wednesday. Besides her husband, Mrs. Robert ASEBROOK is survived by three daughters, two sons, six sisters and five brothers. The body was taken to Degenhart funeral home.

Born in Goshen, O., Mr. O'CONNOR had resided in Springfield for the past 35 years, and was an automobile salesman in the city for 15 years. He was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. In addition to the daughter in whose home he died, survivors include his widow, Pearl ANDERSON O'CONNOR; two sons, Emmett M. of Dayton, and Lewis W. of Springfield: two sisters, Mrs. John BARWISE of Detroit and Mrs. Earl THATCHER of Springfield, and eight grandchildren. The body was taken to the Littleton funeral home, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be conducted by the Re. C. R. SMITH at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. She is survived by her husband and parents, who live in Springfield, one sister Mrs Wilma Long of Springfield and one brother Martin Miller in the U S Navy. The body was taken to Richards Memorial Home, where services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday by the Rev C E Byers. Funeral services form Mrs. Albert COMPTON, 87, who died at 12:30 am Monday in the Odd Fellows Home after five years of failing health, will be held at 10 am Wednesday in Woods Funeral Home. The Rev. C.R. SMITH, pastor of Lagonda United Brethren Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. She was born and spent her entire life in Clark County. Her husband, who died many years ago, was a carpenter contractor. His work was, in a large measure, responsible for the construction of the building now occupied by Wren's Store. She was admitted to the home eight years ago, under sponsorship of Springfield Lodge No 33, IOOF. Her suvivors include two sons, Roy of Columbus and Ralph of Los Angeles, Calif. and two grandchildren.

Prior to his retirement in 1941, Mr. GRAY had been employed by the French and Hecht Co, as a molder for 40 years. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Artie GRAY of Springfield; one son, Clark J. GRAY, city fire marshall; five daughters, Mrs. John GRAM, Mrs. William GEER, Mrs. Paul GEER, Mrs. Leo MAGGART, all of Springfield, and Mrs. Phil EADES of Lancaster; one brother, George R, of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Cora FATZINGER, Mrs. Ella TRUMAN, both of Springfield; and eight grandchildren. Born in Lewis County, KY, Aug. 28, 1883, the son of Benjamin and Melvina JACKSON, he had been a resident of Clark County for a number of years, and was engaged in farming. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ada JACKSON, of Decatur, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Laura BILYEU, Mrs. Estella FETTERS both of Springfield; and Mrs. Cora POLLEY of Trinity, KY.; one brother, Charles JACKSON of Springfield; and one half brother, Albert CRUCKER of Peru, Ind. Mrs. Julius HOLTZMILLER, 70, died at 3 pm Monday in her home here, 108 N Church St, following a heart attack and several years failing health. She had been a resident of New Carlisle for 44 years and was a memer of St Johns Evangelical Church of Springfield. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Orville LITTRICK, Zanesville; a grand daughter, Mrs. Homer F. TOBIN, Zanesville; a grandson, William O LITTRICK, Zanesville; and a great granddaughter, Lee Anne TOBIN, Zanesville. The body was removed to the Doom Bros. Funeral Home in New Carlisle and was to be returned to the residence at 2 pm Tuesday for services there at 2 pm Wednesday. Burial will be made in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield.

Va., April 23, 1882, the daughter of James and Nancy CURREY, Mrs. HASSLER had lived in Springfield for about 43 years. Her husband, Riley HASSLER, a cement contractor in Springfield, preceded her in death, in 1941. Mrs. HASSLER was a member of Story-Hypes Methodist Church. Survivors are a son, Walter Howard HASSLER of New York City; three daughters, Mrs. Mable LEMLEY of Springfield, Mrs. Jane KING of Tremont City and Mrs. KIDD; six grandchildren; a brother, S. F. Elizabeth CULP Dies At Age 57. Mrs. Elizabeth Anna CULP, 57, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday n her residence, 2134 Erie Avenue, after a brief illness. Born in Scioto County on October 2, 1887, she was the daughter of Nelson and Elizabeth LANSING, and had resided in Clark County for the past 35 years, spending the last 11 years in Springfield. She was the widow of Joseph CULP, who died in 1934. Survivors are two sons, Wilbur A., of Near St. Paris, and John H., of Springfield; four brothers, Walter LANSING, of Jackson, Jack LANSING, of Portsmouth, and Robert LANSING, of South Webster, Willis LANSING, of Columbus; three sisters, Mrs. Rhoda MCDANIEL and Miss Jessie, both of South Webster, and Mrs. Floyd POWELL of Sciotoville Station; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. MOOTS Death Is Blamed on Monoxide Gas. Fayette County Coroner Returns Verdict in Case of Springfield. Frank W. MOOTS, 35, of 211 East Pleasant Street, whose lifeless body was discovered in his automobile, died from inhalation of monoxide gas, according to Fayette County Coroner N. M. Reiff, who Tuesday night returned a verdict of accidental death. The car in which MOOTS was riding along apparently skidded from State Route 70 into a ditch midway between Washington Court House and Jeffersonville. Fayette County authorities said passersby noticed the machine in the ditch about 1 a.m. Tuesday but the body was undiscovered until the passerby examined the automobile. Mr. MOOTS left Springfield about 10 p.m. Monday and was en route to the home of relative near Washington Court House where his wife, Elva Mae, was visiting. He was born in Washington Court House August 7, 1909, but had lived in Springfield for 25 years. Mr. MOOTS was on leave of absence from the Steel Products Engineering C. and was working part-time at the Anderson Drug Store. He was a member of the Washington Court House Baptist Church. Besides his widow, Mr. MOOTS leaves a son, Frank, Jr., Springfield; father, Charles W., Springfield; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha MILLER, and Mrs. Iva MULLEN, both of Springfield; and Mrs. Blanche KENNEDY, of Dayton; and two brothers, Edward, of Peebles; and Carl of Springfield. The body was removed Tuesday night to the Jackson-Lytle funeral home, Springfield, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. I. P. Day, pastor of the Clifton Avenue Methodist Church will officiate. The body then will be removed to the Klever funeral home at Washington Court House, for services at 1:30 p.m. Friday, also in charge of the Rev. Day. Burial will be in the Washington Court House Cemetery.

Logan County Coroner Dr. C. E. Thompson said death was due to natural causes and probably was caused by a heart attack. Mr. WELCH was born near Blanchester Nov. 12, 1887, but had lived in Springfield and Clark County for the past 50 years. He was employed by the Stanley Machine and Tool Co. Page 16. Illness of Two Hours is Fatal. Mrs Clarabelle WELLS, 27, wife of Roy A WELLS, of Pitchin, died at 1:45 pm Thursday in her residence, following a two-hour illness. Mrs WELLS had been doing the family washing, seemingly in usual healthy, only 35 minutes before her children returned from school and found her unconscious, her husband said. The cause of death has not been determined, pending an autopsy. Mrs WELLS was born in Springfield April 13, 1917, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Loren HIXON. Having moved away from this city when a child, she later returned to Clark County where she had resided for the past 10 years. Mrs WELLS was a member of the Daughters of America in Pitchin, Pitchin Grange and Pitchin Methodist Church. She was graduated from Waterloo High School in 1934 and Rio Grande College in 1936. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Myron and Merrill, twins, and Roy Wayne, all at home; her parents of Columbus, four brothers, Kenneth, George, and Davis, all of Columbus, and Sgt James serving in the Army. The body was removed to Richards Memorial Home and will be returned to the residence at noon Saturday. Funeral services will be at 1 pm Sunday in the Pitchin Methodist Church, with the Rev Raymon Konkright officiating. Burial will be in the Garlough Cemetery.
