Samuel SHEETS, 94, Civil War veteran and an "old time fiddler" who played for his comrades during the war and later for countless weddings and dances during the 75 years he resided in the Enon community, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. Born in Burke County, Pennsylvania, he spent most of his life in and near Enon. He was a farmer by occupation, and his "fiddle," as he termed his violin, was his one great hobby--one that brought him prominence throughout Clark and nearby counties. During the Civil War he served in the First Ohio Artillery Regiment and his first engagement was at Knoxville, Tenn. In later years he recalled playing his violin to cheer the soldiers of his regiment. The same violin had been in his possession for about 75 years. After retiring from his farm near Enon, he lived in the village a number of years and two years ago went to Dayton make his home with a son, Henry I. SHEETS. Mr. SHEETS was a brother of David SHEETS, also a Civil War veteran, who died in his home at Beattytown some time ago. Besides the son living in Dayton, three daughters, Mrs. Eva SHEETS of Rossburg, O.; Mrs. Charles SHELLABARAGER of Osborn, Route 1, and Mrs. Victor HANES of Enon; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in the son's residence in Dayton, 47 Lorenz av., and at 2:30 p.m. in the Enon Christian Church. Burial will be made in Enon Cemetery.

Edward Harrison RICE, 80, died at 11:10 p.m. at the home of his grandson, Wesley POLAND, 643 Selma rd. Mr. RICE, who was retired, had been ill for two years. He is survived by a sister, Miss Myra RICE, of this city, and seven grandchildren. Mr. RICE was born in Clark County, the son of Harrison and Amelia RICE, pioneer residents. The body was removed to the Littleton funeral home.

MCKINNEY, MILLER Name of Newspaper is Daily News, Springfield, OH on Friday, March 17, 1939

Lewis L. MILLER, 45, former mayor of Springfield and a practicing attorney, who was prominent as a leader in Republican circles of Springfield and Clark County, died of a heart ailment at 1:25 a.m. Friday at the City Hospital. He lived on the Home rd., west, in a home near the Springfield Country Club, which he had recently purchased. Mr. MILLER had been a patient at the hospital since March 11. He died from a heart ailment. He had been in failing health for the last few months and so serious did his condition become on last Saturday that he was taken to the hospital for rest and observation. Mr. MILLER had held many responsible positions with the Republican party, and for two years he held the chairmanship of the Clark County Republican Central and Executive committees. Having been elected to the City Commission in 1929. Mr. MILLER took his office with that body in January, 1930 and in 1932, he became president of the City Commission and ex-officio mayor. During his presidency of the City Commission, Mr. MILLER was instrumental in bringing Ralph E. Gavin to Springfield as city manager. Mr. MILLER stepped into the limelight of the Republican National convention in 1936 when he was selected as Springfield's delegate to that convention in Cleveland. He was elected chairman of the permanent organization committee, considered a most important post. The Cleveland convention saw the nomination of Alfred G. Landon for the Presidency of the United States. Associated with Mr. Miller in the practice of law, with offices in the First National Bank and Trust Building, was Otho L. MCKINNEY. These attorneys had been in business together about six years. Previous to that time, Mr. MILLER had a law office of his own. He was born near Mechanicsburg, and had lived in Springfield for 39 years. He was a graduate of the Springfield High School and Attended the grade schools of the city. He was also a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College. Studying law in Cleveland, Mr. MILLER worked his way through college, driving a motor truck by day and studying at night. While attending school in Springfield, he secured his first job, that of driving a grocery wagon, for his father, the late Samuel MILLER. At an early age, Mr. MILLER was judge of the Springfield Police Court, before it became the Municipal Court. His service in that capacity was in 1924 and 1925. Mr. MILLER possessed keen executive and organizing ability. He was appointed as receiver for the Commercial Savings Bank, former located at Limestone and High sts. He was a member of the Fifth Lutheran Church; the St. Andrew's lodge No 619, Free and Accepted Masons; the Springfield Chapter and Springfield Council of Palestine Commandery, No. 33, Knights Templar; Springfield Lodge, Benevolent Order of Elks, and the Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of the Ohio Bar Association. E leaves his wife, Mrs. Maude M. MILLER; three children, Louise, Carolyn and Robert; his mother Mrs. Charlotte MILLER, and a brother, Russell, all of Springfield. The body was taken to the Jackson Funeral Home for Services at 2:30 p.m. Monday in charge of the Rev. Dr. C. Webster Spayde, former pastor of the Fifth Lutheran Church, and the Rev. John M. Recher, present pastor of that church. Burial will be made in Ferncliff Cemetery.

After an illness of several weeks, George Martin BAYERS, formerly owner for 30 years of the old Bayers Transfer Co., first at Locust and High streets and later at Naghten and High streets, died at his home, 19041/2 South High street, Tuesday, at the age of 84 years. Funeral services will be held in St. Ladislaus church probably at 9 a.m. Friday and interment will be in Calvary cemetery. The body will lie at the Egan-Ryan funeral home until time of services. Mr. BAYERS is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary BAYERS; two daughters Mrs. Mary MELLON and Miss Margaret M. BAYERS, and three sons, Robert, Henry and William BAYERS. Mr. BAYERS was a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Yellow Springs, and the Knights of Pythias lodge of Enon. One brother, John, of Des Moines, Ia., survives. The body was taken to the Boehringer Funeral Home in Enon, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday. Burial will be made in the Enon Cemetery.

Mr. RUST was a retired carpenter and a member of the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. KISSELL was division engineer of the Ohio division of the New York Central System, with headquarters in Bellefountaine. He had previously worked in offices of the railroad in Mt Carmel, Ill., and Galion, O., and had been enployed in the railroad's engineering department since graduating from Ohio State University in 1907. Surviving are his wife, and a daughter, Mrs. William ROYER of Jackson Heights, N.Y. The funeral services and burial will be held Wednesday in Bellefontaine.

Conrad VOLLMER Dies At Age 54. Illness Proves Fatal To Restaurant Proprietor. Conrad J. VOLLMER, operator of a restaurant at 1218 West Main Street for the past 35 years, died Friday at 8:30 p.m. in his home at 405 North Bell Avenue. He was 54. Death followed an illness of three months. A life resident of Springfield, Mr. Vollmer was a member of St. Mary Church and of the Holy Name Society. Chester Keeton fatally injured in traffic accident. Chester Keeton, 34, of 427 E. Liberty St., died upon arrival at the City Hospital about 8 p.m. Mrs. Ellen C. Keeton, 39, wife of Chester Keeton, fractured pelvis and ruptured bladder; condition critical. Mr. Keeton was fatally injured when his auto and another driven by Stowe collided on the Old Clifton Rd., just south of the city limits. Keeton and his wife were taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The body of Mr. Keeton was taken to the Littleton Funeral Home. His widow, Ellen, a daughter, Mattie; his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Samuel Keeton, Springfield; and a brother, William Keeton, Springfield, survive. Coroner Austin Richards, who investigated the accident in which Mr. Keeton was fatally injured, gave a verdict Monday that the death was accidental.

Fountain av., where she had been a patient for approximately two months. The body was removed to the Boehringer Funeral Home at Enon, where Mrs. BENLINGER had been a resident for many years. One son, Stanley, of Akron; one sister, Mrs. Lou MILLER of Springfield, and two grandchildren survive. Her husband Aaron, preceded her in death five years ago. The body will be returned to the residence Monday evening for funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be made in Enon Cemetery.

John E EVILSIZOR, 61, died Tuesday at 6:15 P.M. in his home at 1034 Broadway. Death followed an illness of eight months. Born in Champaign County on July 30, 1877, Mr Evilsizor had been a local resident 40 years, prior to his retirement last November because of ill health. Mr Evilsizor had been employed as an engineer in the stoker division of The Steel Products Engineering Co for 12 years. Mr Evilsizor was a member of Grace Methodist Church, Anthony Lodge No 455, Free and Accepted Masons, and Champion Council No 2, Junior Order, United American Mechanics. Survivors are the widow, Lydia (Hughes), two sons, Harold R and Homer H both of Springfield, four brothers, Jacob, Joseph and Melvin all of Urbana and three grandchildren, Marilene, Darlene and Jack EVILSIZOR, all of Springfield. The body was removed to the Jackson funeral home and will be returned to the residence Thursday morning. Springfield Woman Succumbs at Age of 48 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Hawver, 48, who died at 10:30 p.m. Monday at her home, 615 East st., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the residence, with burial in Calvary cemetery. The body was taken to the O'Brien funeral home and will be returned to the residence Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Hawver had been ill but a short time. She was a life resident of Springfield. She was a member of the Central Methodist Church and belonged to several fraternal groups including Ivor Rebekah Lodge, No. 415, I.O.O.F., Norris Chapter, O.E.S. and the Areme Club of the Chapter. She formerly owned and operated the Springfield Business Service. The body was removed to the Littleton Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are being made for Mrs. Pauline SAUTER, 66, who died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 379 East Cassilly Street. She had lived in Springfield for 49 years. A native of Germany, Mrs. SAUTER was the widow of John SAUTER who died in Springfield in 1936. Mrs. SAUTER was a member of St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, and also a member of the Woman's Guild and the home department of that church, and of Ivor Lodge No. 145, Daughters of Rebekah, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Survivors are two sons, John of Springfield, and William of Pittsburgh, Pa., a sister, Mrs. Christian NACHTRIEB of Springfield, and three grandchildren. The body was removed to the Richards funeral home.
