Retired navy Cmdr. Sylvester A. THOMAS, 81, of Pensacola died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital. Mr. THOMAS was a native of Springfield, Ohio (son of Joseph Granville THOMAS and Bessie CALLISON) and had been a resident of pensacola for the past 34 years. He retired as a commander in the U. S. Navy after 33 years of service and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. THOMAS was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Pensacola Golden Agers, the Sierra Club, Silver Eagles, Pensacola Junior College Seniors Club and the Retired officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy O'Connor THOMAS, two daughters and sons-in- law, Marilyn and Ray HANSEN of Jackson, Miss, and Barbara and Michael DEEP of Montgomery, Ala; a son and daughter-in-law, Marshall W and Alyce THOMAS of Cincinnati; a sister Pearlie McNAIR of Springfield, Ohio, a brother, James A. THOMAS of Arthur, Tenn; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be at 9;30 am Tuesday at St.Paul Catholic Church with Msgr. George Sindik officiating. Burial will be in Barrancaas National Cemetery with Harper-Morris memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 pm today. The Rosary will be recited at 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be make to St. Michael Cemetery in care of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee or to the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

He was born November 23, 1923, in Springfield; the son of Earl V. and Helen (PAYNE) BALLENTINE. Retired from Siemens in Urbana after 34 years of service. Member of the Harmony Lodge number eight, F. & A.M., Urbana, and Maiden Lane Church of God, Springfield. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Pam BALLENTINE of Mechanicsburg, and Bruce and Janie BALLENTINE of Urbana; one daughter, Mrs. Jayme (Sherri) DABE of Springfield; five grandchildren; and one sister, Joanne DYER of Findlay. Page 15. Elden A. BOTKIN, 82, of North Hampton died Monday, December 28, 1992, at 10:25 p.m. in Mercy Medical Center, Springfield. He was born June 19, 1910 in Pike Township, Clark County, the son of Leedom and Sarah BRUNER BOTKIN. He was a graduate of Wittenberg University and spent 40 years as a Teacher-Principal in Tipp City, Medway and Springfield Schools, retiring in 1970 as principal from Bushnell Elementary. Elden was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for over 50 years, was a choir member for 45 years and held many other various positions. He was a member of Beech Grove Grange, North Hampton Lions Club and a Pike Township Trustee for 28 years. Elden served as a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (FUNDERBURG) BOTKIN; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Michael HAINES of Keene, New Hampshire; son and daughter-in law, Bill and Rita BOTKIN of North Hampton; five grandchildren, Geoffrey HAINES, Jennifer and husband Mark GUEST, Kristen HAINES, Julie BOTKIN, Jonathan BOTKIN; great-grandson, Gregory Michael GUEST; brother, Homer BOTKIN of Springfield. He also held positions of assistant classified advertising manager and outside salesman. George E. INGLING, 86 of 10714 South Charleston Pike, South Charleston died in his residence on Wednesday, February 17, 1993, at 12:20 p.m. following a lengthy illness. He was born in Clark County on April 16, 1906, the son of Guy and Elizabeth Jane (Allen) Ingling. He grew up on Twin Oaks Dairy Farm near South Charleston, graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1924, and later from Willis Business College. After beginning his career in funeral service as an apprentice with the Frank J. Coffman Funeral Home in 1930, he returned to South Charleston 1950 to purchased the W. D. Sprague Funeral Home. In 1976, he merged his funeral service with the Williams Funeral Homes of Cedarville and Springfield, and in 1990, merged again with Jackson, Lytle and Coffman Funeral Homes in Springfield and Yellow Springs, forming the Jackson, Lytle, & Ingling Williams Funeral Homes. He was currently serving as Vice President and Manager of the South Charleston Chapel. He has lived in the Clark County area all of his life and has been a licensed funeral director for almost 60 years. In addition to his funeral career, one of his top priorities was his church. He was a member of the South Charleston United Methodist Church, a district lay leader for the United Methodist Church, district lay speaker preaching in almost all United Methodist Churches in this area. He taught Sunday School for several years and later organized South Charleston Prayer Breakfast. He is a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, Clark County Funeral Directors Association, Clark County Farm Bureau, Kiwanis of South Vienna, Plattsburg Alumni Association, Past President of the South Charleston Community Club, Quarterback Club of South Charleston, Southeastern Ban Boosters, and had served on South Charleston Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife of almost 64 years, Thelma (Chaffin) Ingling; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Goodbar.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Phyllis Ingling, all of South Charleston; a brother-in-law, Charles Bost of Springfield; four grandchildren, Jill Goodbar and her finance Donald Bench of Elmore, Joy Canning and her husband, Brad, of Cincinnati, Jeffrey Allen and JeriAnn Allen of South Charleston; one foster grandson, David Schultz; several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin, William, and Dr. Howard Ingling; three sisters, Vera Hebble, Elizabeth Betttelon, and Grace Bost. Musically, he was a member of various bands and symphony orchestras. Most recently, he played with the Horizon Orchestra of Berks County. He served in the Chemical Warfare Division of the United States Army during World War I. For many years he was affectionately referred to as the "Mayor of Cassilly Street" by his many neighborhood friends. Survivors include one niece, Geneva LOUDEN of Urbana; one nephew, Martin DONNELY of Springfield; close friends, Frank and Rita Burns, Bill and Peggy Waln, and Jim and Betty McGowan. She was born May 5, 1921, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, the daughter of William and Minnie Dempsey. Mrs. Dempsey is survived by two sisters, one brother, a daughter-in-law, Annette McDavid; and a niece, Saundra Cotton, both of Springfield; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald McDavid. Her body was entrusted to the Dennis L. Porter Funeral Homes, Inc. where friends may call after 1 p.m. on Friday until time of services at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clara Boyd William officiating. Her body will then be cremated. Luella S. EUTSLER, 81, of Oakwood Village, 1500 Villa Road, died Tuesday, August 24, 1993, at 5:50 a.m. after an extended period of invalidism and failing health. She was born October 9, 1911, in Erie, Pennsylvania the daughter of Arthur and Pearl (WEIDLER) SHATTUCK. Mrs. Eutsler was educated in the public schools of Erie, the Erie Branch of Edinboro State Teacher's College; received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Berea College, Berea, Kentucky and Masters of Science Library of Science degree from the School of Library Science at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. She married Daniel Dodge EUTSLER on December 26, 1935 in Erie, Pennsylvania and became the parents of two children, Patricia (EUTSLER) GILLIS of Brockville, Ontario, Canada and Robert EUTSLER of Dayton, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; two sisters, Mrs. Irene S. MAY of Erie, Pennsylvania, Miss Ruth SHATTUCK of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; four grandchildren, Stuart Daniel GILLIS of the Canadian Navy, Aylmer, Quebec, Canada, Brother Matthew GILLIS of Community of Jesus of Orleans, Massachusetts, Margaret Elizabeth GILLIS and Robert Andrew GILLIS of Brockville, Ontario, granddaughter-in-law, Vivian DUMAS GILLIS; great-grandsons, Jonathan Andrew GILLIS and Benjamin Joseph GILLIS of Aylmer, Canada; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Eutsler taught in the public schools of Kentucky, Alaska and Virginia; joined the faculty of Wittenberg University in 1955 serving as Reference Librarian at the Thomas Library for twenty-two years; was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Phi Mu Sororities; recipient of the Lily Foundation Award to study at the Chicago Lutheran Seminary during the summer of 1959; recipient of a National Science Foundation Award for summer study at the University of Hawaii and attended an International Library Conference during the summer of 1970. She was also a member of the Columbus Colony of the Ohio Society of Mayflower Descendants and was listed in the ninth edition of Who's Who of American Women. Visitation will be held in the Chapel of Oakwood Village from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday and 9-10:30 a.m. Friday in Central United Methodist Church where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with Bishop R. Kern EUTSLER of Richmond, Virginia and assisted by Rev. Joyce E. FRY and Dr. Arthur L. LUTZ of Wittenberg University. Interment in Ferncliff Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
