Eugene W. SHEPARD, 72, of 227 W. Grand av., died at 7:10 a.m. Thursday in his residence. For the last 22 years he had been the proprietor of Shepards's Market, 915 S. Lowry av. Born in Alden, Ia., Oct. 8, 1879, Mr. SHEPARD of David (should be Jesse) and Augusta SHEPARD. He had resided in Springfield for 39 years and was a member of Central Christian Church. Mr. Shepard is survived by his widow, Ida V.: two sons, RM 1 C Eugene W. SHEPARD, Jr., U. S. Army, Port Columbus, O., and Jack K. of Springfield; three brothers, DeLoss of Alden, LeRoy C. and Dr. R. G. SHEPARD, both of this city three sisters, Miss Grace SHEPARD and Mrs. Nellie PARKER , both of Alden, and Miss Olive SHEPARD of Los Angeles, Calif., and three grandchildren. The body was removed to Littleton funeral home.

Mr. HUTCHINS has been retired since 1912. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 51. He was born in Springfield in 1862. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. his wife, Mrs. Sarah HUTCHINS preceded him in death in 1944. The body was removed to the Littleton funeral home where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Kay M. Glaesner. Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery.

BOWLUS, BOWSER, HUGHEL Name of Newspaper is Daily News, Springfield, OH on Saturday, November 10, 1951

Lewis C. HUGHEL, 75, a native of Clark County, who had been residing for several years in the Douglas Hotel, Urbana, died at 8 pm Friday in the Champaign County hospital where he had been a patient for about a week. Mr. HUGHEL, a retired farmer of the Terre Haute vicinity, was born in Clark County a son of Francis and Alice BOWLUS HUGHEL. Surviving area a daughter, Mrs. John BOWSER of Pleasant Hill; three grandchildren; and a brother, William HUGHEL of Springfield, Mr. HUGHEL'S wife died in 1944. The body was taken to the Richeson-Wickham funeral home in St. Paris where friends may call and where services will be conducted at 2 pm Monday. Burial will be in Ferncliff cemetery.

Frank R. WHITE, 58, of 622 Snowhill blvd., a New York Central System conductor, died at 9 a.m. Sunday in his home. He had been ill the last four months. An employee for the railroad 31 years, Mr. WHITE was a native of Lawrence County. He was born September 19, 1983, a son of William and Martha STEWART WHITE. Mr. WHITE formerly resided in Urbana, Ill., and came to Springfield seven years ago. He was a member of the Waterloo, O. Methodist Church, H.S. Kissell Lodge No. 674, F. and A.M.; the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Order of Railroad Conductors. Surviving are his widow, Evelyn, a daughter, Mrs. O. E. Austin of Springfield; a son, David F. WHITE of Champaign, Ill.; and four grandchildren. The body was taken to the Richards Memorial Home where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Harold L. Myers, Jr., pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church. He had been in failing health for the past two years and critically ill for the past month. A native of Clark County, Mr Geron was born in Mad River Township on April 13, 1873, a son of Adam and Eva RETTIG GERON. He was a retired farmer and a member of Lagonda EUB Church. Mr and Mrs Geron would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary May 26th. They were married in Champaign County and lived for 47 years on Buck Creek lane, 35 years of which were spent on their farm. In February, 1945, the Geron's moved into Springfield. Mr Geron's survivors include his widow, Lottie, two sons, Dewey and Forrest; one grandson, Norman GERON, all of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews. Page 1. Springfielder Dies in Crash on Route 40.
Robert W SHAY 40, 0f 563 E Main st, was killed Monday night when his car collided with a tractor-trailer on U S Route 40 near the Tecumseh rd. The fatal crash occurred about 7:30 pm as Mr SHAY attempted to overtake another car, according to State Highway Patrolmen who investigated. Witnesses said the SHAY car was traveling about 70 miles an hour when it collided with the heavy truck. Neither George B Chandler, 33, Kansas City, Mo driver of the truck, nor Edwin W Kohl, 25, of 1574 Fulton av, driver of the other car, was injured. The left side of Mr SHAY's car was sheared off as it struck the left front end of the truck. Mr Kohl's car was damaged when debris from the SHAY auto bounced into it. Bits of torn metal were strewn along the highway for yards. All three vehicles were towed away after the crash. Mr Kohl and Mr SHAY were driving toward Springfield and the truck was traveling west when the collision occurred. Mr Kohl said he had just turned onto Route 40 from the Tecumseh rd and that Mr SHAY's car was approaching "a couple of squares down the road." Mr Kohl said he did not notice the SHAY auto again until it hit the truck in an attempt to pass. Heavy U S Route 40 traffic was slowed or halted during a period of more than an hour. State Highway Patrolmen, Donnelsville Police Chief John Frank and deputies of Sheriff J Arthur Shuman cooperated in moving traffic until the road was cleared. Mr SHAY was the eighth victim of fatal traffic accidents in Clark County this year. His death was the third of the year outside the City of Springfield. Clark County Coroner Austin Richards said preliminary investigation indicated a verdict of accidental death would be returned. However, he states, a complete investigation will be conducted before a decision is announced. The Donnelsville Fire Department made a run to the scene to extinguish a fire in the SHAY car, Donnelsville Mayor Charles Chapman reported. Mr SHAY was pronounced dead on arrival at City Hospital. The body was taken to the O'Brien-Kenney funeral home where friends may call from Wednesday evening until time of the services, which will be held at 9 am Friday in St Bernard Church. Burial will follow in St Bernard Cemetery. A truck driver, Mr SHAY had been employed by C and D Motor Delivery the past six months. Previously he was a driver for Hayes Freight Lines for five years and Commercial Motor Freight for six years. A native of Springfield, he was a member of St Bernard Church. Surviving are the widow., Julia, a son, Robert ; a daughter, Maryln ; his parents, Mr and Mrs Daniel SHAY ; two brothers, Clarence T and Daniel B ; and a sister, Mrs John FOGERTY, all of Springfield.

Pg 3. Edward P. CHERRY, 75, well-known barber with a shop at 205 N. Fountain av., died in his home, 1055 E. High st., at 2 p.m., Friday, following a brief illness. A native of Kentucky, Mr. CHERRY has resided in Springfield for approximately 60 years. He had owned and operated the shop on Fountain av. for the last 12 years, and prior to that had a shop on College av. In his earlier years, he was in the tin-cutting business with his father, Nathaniel, on Sherman av. In addition to being a well-known barber, Mr. CHERRY was an active Mason and a member of the Clifton av. Methodist Church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 147 in Dayton; the Eastern Star, Home City Chapter 258 in Springfield, and the Scottish Rite and Antioch Temple Shrine in Dayton. Survivors include his widow, Jennie T., a daughter, Mrs. Gladys BOOTH of Springfield; two step-daughters, Mrs. Helen WIERMAN of Lima, and Mrs. Evelyn HUDSON of Springfield; one grandchild, and six step-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Rose funeral home where Clark Lodge No. 101, F. and A. M. will hold services at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and the Eastern Star will conduct services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Page 4. One of Springfield's pioneer aviators, Eldon G. MILLER, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday in his residence. He was 51 years old. Mr. Miller resided on the Lower Snyderville Rd., Springfield, Route 1. He learned to fly at the old Municipal Airport, now the Clark County Fairgrounds; then became flying instructor for the Little-Greiner Flying Service, Inc., and later years for the Crabill Flying Service. During World War II, Mr. Miller instructed air cadets at Wittenberg College. He also became an instructor at Dayton Municipal Airport in Vandalia. He was born in Clark County, Feb. 23, 1901, a son of Albertus and Rachel GORDON MILLER. He resided here almost all of his life. Mr. Miller was a member of the Enon Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Yellow Springs and Grotto in Springfield. He is survived by one son, Eldon A.; one stepson, Charles REAVER of Cincinnati; one sister, Mrs. A. A. ARTHUR of the W. Possum Rd. The body was taken to the Richards Memorial Home where funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Enon Cemetery.

Main st., well known and picturesque vendor of the Springfield Daily News and Sun in the down town section since the mid-thirties, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Jackson-Lyttle funeral home. Mr. Allen died at 12:30 a.m. Monday in Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 16 after he collapsed at High and Limestone sts. Mr. Allen was known to baseball fans of some years ago as the popular mascot of the Old Central League team in Springfield. He participated in amateur baseball play in Springfield and at one time was manager of an amateur team. Before he became a newspaper vendor, he worked for a number of years for the Springfield Leather Products Co. Ben W. HAWLEY, 72, of 32 W. Harding rd., former Clark County sheriff's deputy and former chief deputy in the county treasurer's office, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Mercy Hospital. He was stricken ill at his residence Saturday night. A barber in Springfield for many years, Mr. HAWLEY served as deputy Clark County treasurer from 1921 to 1925 under Treasurer R. A. GOODFELLOW. From 1925 to 1929 he was chief deputy treasurer under County Treasurer Robert SNYDER, and in 1935 served as a deputy sheriff under Clark County Sheriff George BENHAM. Since his retirement from shop work in the barbering business, Mr. HAWLEY had been barbering at City Hospital, Mercy Hospital and the Oesterlen Home. Born in Troy, O., March 4, 1880, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. David A. HAWLEY. He was a member of Second Lutheran Church, and of Anthony Lodge 455, F. and A. M. Mr. Hawley was the last member of his immediate family. His wife, Florence A. died Jan. 3, 1948. One nephew in Springfield, and two cousins in Miami County are his only survivors. The body has been taken to Jackson-Lytle funeral home for services there at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. John M. Warnes officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

LUDMAN, of St. Petersburg, Fla; a step-daughter, Helen PIERUCCI, of Springfield; and a sister, Mrs. Alice LIGGETT, of Zanesville. The body was taken to the Richards Memorial Home.
