Mr KIRKPATRICK was retired as owner of Thoro-Speed Corporation and was a Veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marcia (BRIGHT) KIRKPATRICK; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathleen KIRKPATRICK of Springfield, Diane and Lee HUDSON of Brooklyn, New York; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Rebecca KIRKPATRICK of Oxford, Ohio, Thomas Jay KIRKPATRICK of Ferraro, Italy and one granddaughter, Olivia K HUDSON. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill KIRKPATRICK. She is survived by her brother, Robert BARTHOLOMEW; sister Katherine RUSSELL; two nieces, Kathleen and Rebecca, all of Springfield; a nephew, Lyle and Linda BATHOLOMEW of Iola, Kansas; and many cousins and friends. Jack A. Martin, Lt. Cmdr. USN, Retired, 78, of Pensacola, died Monday, October 4, 1999 after a brief illness. He was born May 25, 1921 in Springfield, Ohio, the only son of Raymond B. and Corrinne Martin. He was the president of his senior class at Springfield High School, and was an active lifetime member of the school's alumni association. A champion swimmer, he attended Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Later, he returned to OSU, earning a Master's Degree in Physical Education to augment his 38-year water survival and safety career in military and government service. He served his country in WWII and during the Korean conflict. He was wounded in the amphibious invasion of Layte in 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return to the U.S. from WWII in 1945, he married the love of his life, Barbara Lou Foley Martin, who preceded him in death in 1996. From 1950-1953, he was the Officer in Charge of the Pensacola Naval Aviation Schools Command's Swim Division. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and employed as a civil servant, serving as a Water Survival Instructor at Naval Aviation Schools Command, NAS Pensacola. Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was promoted to Water Survival Standardization Officer. During his career with Schools Command, he trained 150,000 students in water survival, as well as 64 Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts. He was rewarded for his efforts by the countless number of pilots whose lives were saved by techniques they learned from Jack Martin at NAS Pensacola Training Tanks I and II. His methods were so highly regarded, it was often said, "He could teach a rock to swim." During his career, Martin conceived and implemented the Naval Survival Swim Syllabus for flight surgeons and was an instrumental member of the Fleet Project Team responsible for the development of the Multi-Place Ditching Trainer, the "Dilbert Dunker," a simulator still used to train pilots to survive crashes in water. He was appointed by the Governor to the Florida Boating Advisory Committee, and served as a volunteer with the Northwest Florida Water Safety Council and the Bream Fishermans' Association. Survivors include sons, Christopher A. Martin and wife, Phyl; Stephen R. Dale was a 1984 graduate of South High school attended Clark State University and was employed by Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, Ohio. Dale enjoyed being involved with children, his own and other people's, and was a Coach in the Vernon-Murphy Little League Baseball. He is survived by his parents of Springfield; his wife, Tamra S (NOTT) PENWELL; children, Donimick DelVecchio, Haley and Brady PENWELL, all at home; one sister and brother-in -law, Lorra L and Jeffery MILLER of Springfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul A and Denise PENWELL of Fenton, Michigan, Michael D and Audrea PENWELL; father-in-law and step-mother-in-law, Jim and Peg NOTT; mother-in-law, Pat MCNAMARA, all of Springfield; three nieces, five nephews; uncles, Dale CRIST, Donald L CRIST and Raymond Douglas PENWELL; special friends, Tony WARE, Matt HENRY and John BENTLEY. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald and Margaret CRIST and Albert and Sarah B PENWELL; uncle Albert Gene PENWELL. Mrs. Baldwin was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church and a teacher retiring from the Springfield City Schools. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and cooking. Her survivors include her daughter, Margaret A. Flowers of Plymouth, Michigan; two grandchildren, Jennifer Flowers of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Neal (Sara) Flowers of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and several nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of eight children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Baldwin in 1986.
